Abstract

Two types of outreach activities carried out in the North of León province (northern Spain) are contextualized, described and valued in this work. The main objective of these field activities is spreading geological knowledge for adult and non-specialized audiences, mostly inhabitants of the rural world. The first type is a bus tour along the Curueño river valley, which is an example of geological outreach using a literary text that is well known and appreciated by the attendees. The second type of activities consists of guided trails to several Geosites of national and provincial interest, which are located in a rural environment. In these field activities, the contents of Geology are intertwined with contributions of a very diverse nature (historical, social, botanic, ethnographic, etc.) made both by the guides but also by the participants, mostly inhabitants of the visited area. These examples are used to show that the hybridisation of geological contents with others that are closer or more familiar to the participants can contribute to breaking down the barrier that many people have towards geology. The good result of the experiences carried out to date suggests that this is one of the paths that geological popularisation should follow in the future.
