Abstract
The removal of phosphorus and nitrogen by the strain Synechocystis sp, cultured in wastewater irrigation runoffs in maize fields, has been addre ssed in the pres ent study. In addition, the above mentioned strain has been cultured in a M&M synthetic medium used as a reference. The tests were carried out in 1L fotobioreactors where temperature and illumination were controlled. Cellular growth rate and CO 2 fixation were analyzed as well. The results show a great potential for nitrogen and phosphorous removal in the wastewaters considered. Moreover, nitrogen removal for wastewater was even greater than that for the synthetic medium. In addition, we proved that CO 2 fixation by this strain is a feasible process in photobioreactors at pilot scale, due to its rapid growth rates, and CO 2 fixation in high density cultures. This, together with the need for high light intensities makes Synechocystis sp. suitable for outdoor growing
