Abstract

This paper presents an educational activity for 4º of ESO and 1º of Bachillerato in which students conduct an inventory of sites of geological interest (geosites) in the school surroundings. As with other, previous projects, this proposal employs geological heritage as a tool to enable and enhance understanding of the Earth Science syllabus. At the same time, the goal of the work methodology developed is to explore the concept of geological heritage in depth, seeking to understand its existence, the problems entailed and the need for its conservation. Besides the need to apply theoretical concepts and understand the geology of their surroundings, conducting an inventory of sites of geological interest requires students to identify what aspects of an element or site are relevant when cataloguing it as part of our geological heritage, to assess the importance of such aspects, to determine any threats and to consider its management. A project of this kind promotes developing positive emotional attitudes towards the area under study, another of the objectives of the activity proposed.
