Resum
The paper presents a comparative study on the cognitive-sensorimotor development of three groups of children: autistic (A), developmentally delayed (D), and normal (N). Using the Uzgiris and Hunt Ordinal Scales, based on Neopiagetian assessment models, the investigation attempts to study what many consider to be the core disorder in autism: a deficit in the development of theory of mind (TM) and not of instrumental theory (IT). This double developmental hypothesis (TM and IT) may help to explain contradictory evidence described in the literature on whether sensorimotor deficits are specific to autistics or not. Autistic children are comparable to developmentally delayed and normal children in skills involving IT, though not if they involve TM. Results are discussed and suggestions are made for future investigations.
