n general, gender differences in reading motivation of students across different academic matters and the scarce number of studies focused on analyzing differences in reading self-efficacy by gender justify the present study. The sample comprised 561 students from 1st to 4th grade of Secondary Education (between 12 and 16 years old). They belong to six public and semi-private schools. The distribution by gender was 278 females and 283 males. We analyze the level of reading self-efficacy by gender through a specific reading self-efficacy questionnaire based on Bandura`s guidelines. Results showed that only students of 4th grade showed significant differences between males and females in the level of reading self-efficacy; females got a higher level of reading self-efficacy than males. In the rest of grades, we obtained the same tendency with a higher self-efficacy in females; however, the differences were not significant. Educational implications and future lines of research are discussed
