Abstract

This paper addresses the controversy surrounding the project for the reform and expansion of the atrium of the Cathedral of León in 1794, focusing the analysis on an aspect still ignored by the historiography: the fact that Joaquín Herrera Lorenzana, the main opponent to the works, was an active member of the networks displayed by the Bourbon reformism in León, largely woven around some members of the Lorenzana family, to which he belonged, who served to the Bourbon monarchy both in León and outside, from their positions in the Church, the army and the high administration. The case also serves to understand the resources available to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando when it came to making effective its power to control the fine arts in Spain.
