Resum

Many grammarians since Andrés Bello have argued that in certain contexts there are complex relatives, grammatical conglomerates formed by the solidary union of an article (el, la, lo, los, las) plus the relative que or quien. They appear especially in the relative prep-ositional constructions with an express antecedent.This paper attempts to demonstrate that these sequences do not form clusters, but rath-er are combinations in which both the article and the relative retain their values, despite the fact that certain circumstances push them to appear together. And, on the contrary, it will be shown that the «simple relatives» quien, cuanto, donde and cuando are complex relatives.
