Résumé
The aim of this paper is to delve into Correas’ approach concerning two particular questions: i) the function of grammar in relation to use; ii) the attention paid to linguistic variation and his preference for the uses of less prestigious social groups. In this regard his viewpoints –which make his Arte de la lengua española castellana (1625) a masterpiece– may be explained based on the concepts of norm and propriety. Concerning the first one, Correas claims for an application of this concept in a similar sense as Coseriu’s linguistic norm; as for the second, it can be explained based on his support of the theory about prim-itive Castilian Spanish.
