Resum

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maize hybrid, time of sowing and grainmaturity at harvest on yield and quality of maize silage, in vitro digestibility and energy value, andthe prediction of milk production by means of an estimative model. An experimental study wasconducted in the Piedmont region (Italy), comparing three different sowing dates (March, Apriland May), two different maize hybrids (Cisko, an early FAO class 300, and Arma, a late FAO class700) and two different stages of maturity at harvest (milk line (ML) «1/4 – 1/3» or «1/2 – 2/3»).Arma 700 yielded 40% more silage than Cisko 300 hybrid. All factors affected moisture contentof silage. Kernel development at 1/2 – 2/3 ML increased DM and starch reducing fibre concentrations.The two hybrids differed significantly in in vitro DM digestibility (higher for Cisko 300),whereas planting dates and maturity stages had no effects. The analytical data obtained werethen used as input variables in a model (Milk2006) for estimating the energy content and potentialmilk production from feeding silage.
