In Tragedia en juego. Toros y tauromaquia en Miguel de Unamuno, José María Balcells exhaustively studies the presence of the bullfighting theme in all of Unamuno's writings, and offers a new reading, in some aspects alternative to the usual and consolidated one, of the author's position on a conflictive reality that was so notorious in his time. The work hybridises research, essay and biographical portrait, focuses on characters forgotten in Unamuno's biographies, and specifies constants and evolutionary variables of the Basque intellectual's attitude and opinions on a subject whose secular roots he attributed to its tragic dimension.
