Abstract

The characterization of vegetation units by means of satellite images is an alternative to the traditional preparation of occupation maps. In this work, a classification methodology, based on the digital processing of satellite multispectral images, is exposed. Using Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images have been made several supervised classifications in order to obtain a map of vegetation units. On the other hand, it has also been studied different information, extracted from the Digital Elevation Model, quantifying the vegetation classification improvement when these characteristics are included. The results, verified by mean several field works, has been evaluated independently and jointly (integrating the multispectral information from the image with the topographic characteristics derived analytically from the Digital Model). The methodology offers a great potential as far as the integration of topographic or spatial information sources with the aim of improve the results obtained with simple spectral classifications.
