Abstract

In order to know the pathogenicity of several Map strains and their ability to infect different animalspecies, an oral experimental infection has been carried out in 30 lambs, divided in 6 groups, infected asfollows: (a) bovine strain, directly isolated from the intestinal mucosa of a clinical case; (b) the same strain afterbeing growth in laboratory media; (c, d) two bovine strains from Argentina, with different genetic pattern; (e)ovine strain purified from the intestinal mucosa; (f) control. Cellular and humoral immune responses wereassessed, as well as the presence of Map DNA in blood by PCR, along 5 mpi. At this time, lambs were killedand pathological and microbiological studies performed in tissue samples. All the strains were able to infect theanimals but differences in the responses were observed. Lesions induced by the ovine strain were most severe.
