Resumen

A Fortress as the last Resting Place of don Alfonso Carrillo, Archbishop of Toledo (1410-1482) The iconographic programs in Archbishop Carrillo’s last fortress intend to capture an allegory of lineage as a general reflection and, on a personal level, provide a description of an aspect of Don Alonso Carrillo’s life. The fortress is rich in peerage allegories, profuse in ethical and political con- tent derived from the adoption of cardinal virtues as a moral system, and poor in traditional Christian funerary iconographic programs. The monument to his memory, which exudes secular humanism, rather resembles a courtier`s memorial than a medieval clergyman’s tomb.
