Abstract

Floristic composition of vegetation and soil seed bank in two herbaceous communities with different traditional management, situated in the Valdeón valley (Picos de Europa) were studied. Indirect germination method was used to study the seed bank. Meadow P2 (no sown 50 years ago, 1 or 2 annual cuts, depending on the year, manured only ocassionally and grazed in autumn) had the larger number of vegetation species. Meadow Pl (alfalfa stopped being sown 7 or 8 years ago, 2 annual cuts, annual manured and grazed in autumn) had the larger number of seed bank species and bigger abundance. Ruderal species and therophyte group had better representation in the meadow Pl. Other families and hemicriptophyte group had better representation in the seed bank of the meadow P2 and in the vegetation of the meadow Pl. There were large diferences between vegetation and seed bank composition. Management influences the floristic composition of the vegetation and the seed bank and induces differences in the vegetation and seed bank composition.
