The writing of Ángel Crespo encompasses the work of a poet, critic and translator, and each facet enhances the other as products of the same astistic sensibility. In his criticism, which centres on the great poets of Western literature, from Dante to Pessoa, Crespo displays a refreshing curiosity characterized by breaking with tradition, which allows the creative act to emerge as a background music. From his fi rst essays, Crespo has elected to defend the creative imagination as a means of acquiring a deeper understanding of reality. And it is this combination of creation and criticism which entows his words with their dynamism, with a continuity which is continually renewed.
