Abstract
Saint John of the Cross was the poet whose influence over the poetry of José Angel Valente was at one and the same time both the most constant and the least conscious. The characteristic negation or reduction which pervades all of Saint John of the Cross's words carne to play a major part in the writings of Valente, tending as they do ever more strongly the impossible up to us by haming it.
