Abstract

A reconstructive exposition is given of the two ideas of a city present in the writings and political actions of Pablo de Olavide. The enlightened ideas to which they obey is examined: nation, reason, reformism, liberalism, as its reality in Spain, as well as the influence on his initial idea of a city as a structural urban, physical, economic and cultural space, centre of work and human life, to which the agricultural activity is subordinated. The ways to develop this idea in his political activities in Sierra Morena, Lima, Madrid and Seville are put forth. The bases of his second idea of a city are highlighted: religious persecution, the French Revolution, the idea of enlightened religion, their gestation in his latest work, The Gospel in Triumph, and how he reversed the relationship city-country, subordinating the city to the country as the centre of activity and human life.
