Resumen
The aim of this paper is to study the configuration of the urban surroundings of the cathedral in León through the Middle Ages, dedicating a special attention to the creation of the "Regla" Square in front of the west wall. That open space became the urban centre of the city along this historical period, to such a point that it was in the end the main stage for sacred and profane activities and, above all, a market place, which the cathedral chapter tried to control, to the detriment of the supremacy of the local council on mercantile activities. This fact brought about continual feuds between both institutions.
