Abstract

One of the basic parameters to be considered in geoheritage management is the valuation of its different elements (sites or objects). In this sense, and always bearing in mind that any assessment is a subjective process that depends on the moment, place and human group that develops it, it is important to standardize the assessment criteria to be applied in specific working contexts with this heritage. This article discusses the different types of interest, either intrinsic or potential use, that have been taken into account in the definition and assessment of geoheritage. The gradual increase of interest on geological heritage implies its incorporation into different societal sectors, forcing to reconsider the validity of the different types of interest. To do this, and based on the ideas contained in the Millennium Assessment report, we propose a list of types of interest that can be used in the definition of geoheritage and their different weighting in inventories with different goals.
