Abstract

This paper discusses information from the grain store silos existing in the community of Castilla y León, belonging to Spain’s network of silos and granaries in order to categorise these constructions so that this information serves as a basis to consider some alternatives to reuse and help energize the villages where they are located. The information has been obtained from the FEGA archive in Madrid, from the Junta de Castilla y León archive in Valladolid and through interviews with silo managers. Of the 173 silos identified in this study, 50 belong to the basic storage network and 123 are in secondary network. They were built over a period of 32 years (1949-1981), and were unevenly distributed. There are silos in 148 villages, Medina del Campo, with four silos is worth a special mention. In terms of typology the type D silos stand out from the rest since they represent 57% of the total. The first reception silos had a small storage capacity which rose gradually as silos of great capacity (macrosilos) were built in the period 1973-1984 with capacities of up to 30,000 t. Most of the silos have a rectangular ground plan (92%) with flat or gable roofs (95%). They have three to nine rows of cells of which the most common is the square shape made by reinforced brick cells.
