In primitive Christian literature it is necessary to define the identity of Christians as a religious group against Judaism and paganism. The clearest and most defining demarcation of the new group is the name by which it is called. Although the term «Christian » barely appears in the New Testament and in the apostolic writings, it will be the usual in non-Christian literature, already from Flavius Josephus, Tacitus and Suetonius
