Abstract

In many protected area karst caves represent natural singularities at an international scale, as the Picos de Europa National Park, which includes the highest density of deep caves in the world. This work aims the geoheritage evaluation of these caves in order to guiding the Administration on cave management actions. Based on cave geomorphological characterization, 14 caves with more than 1 km of depth have been selected as representative LIG of the endokarst of Picos de Europa. The evaluation system evidences that the geoheritage, scientific interest and potential public use of the 14 LIG is high, its conservation status is good, and its fragility and vulnerability are low. These results, linked to the low scientific knowledge of the caves, indicate that the promotion of their speleological exploration and scientific investigation should be continued. Subsequently, dissemination resources highlighting their natural value and redesigning the access regulation to caves would be elaborated.
