Resumo

Habanera is a musical genre considered typical of coastal areas by scholars. linking them with trade between Spain and Cuba. However, there is a village in Valladolid, Mayorga de Campos, in which the habanera has been interpreted for more than a century and has a prestigious Trovada held in the village for 24 years. By analyzing the documents of the municipality of Mayorga, interviews, newspaper sources and cataloging and studying the musical repository from The Teresa Pérez Daniel Habanera Foundation, I have ruled out the usual explanations of the arrival of Habanera to Spain as an explanation to the Mayorga de Campos case. Neither trade relations with overseas nor emigration from the village to cities with large tradition in the genre seem credible entryways of the habanera in this town. More importance had the recruitment of men for the war in Cuba since 1895 and the fondness of people from Mayorga to opera and dance. On the other hand, once the habanera entered the town, several factors favored its spread and settlement: buskers, a music teacher and conductor of the municipal band, employed by the municipality, the formation of abundant musical groups in the villa, the oral tradition in the family and events and local festivals, have led the habanera to be written, performed and broadcast in Mayorga for generations.
