Abstract

The accumulation of a surplus favoured ownership and introduced as well as reproduced inequality between human beings. The consequent development of cities, the states and commerce redefined the concept of property, leading to initial consumption, which, in the industrial phase, veered towards unexpected and excessive spending often confused with ―luxurious consumption of goods and experiences‖. With this research I aim to analyse how the unquestionable legitimacy of luxury gives it a strategic position that symbolizes and represents an image of power and the identifying relations built by humans.
