Abstract
Intra-plate deformation plays a key role in the evolution of topographic reliefs and intramountain basins located far from plate boundaries. However, the mechanisms that govern these processes are still not well known. It is often assumed that the main factors controlling intra-plate deformation are a result of rheological variations, controlled by the tecto-thermal state and age of the lithosphere, as well as the presence of crustal heterogeneities that aim to localise deformation. Under this view, the Iberian Peninsula represents the idyllic conditions to study such processes that may provide new insights on the origin and distribution of reliefs. Therefore, we have carried out a series of analogue lithospheric experiments, where large-scale differences in the tecto-thermal structure of the lithosphere from east to west have been investigated, as well as, the role played by the main tectonic structures that governed the topographic configuration during the Alpine evolution of Iberia. This study has been completed with the particle image velocimetry analysis from model surface (PIV), which allowed us to shed light into the kinematic characteristics and evolution of faulting during deformation.
