Abstract
We live in increasingly unequal societies, but nevertheless more and more wealth is produced. Under neoliberal capitalism, education has become a commodity aimed at promoting employability and competition for scarce jobs, relegating training for the critical exercise of citizenship to the background. This paper explores the possibilities of a Basic Income as a socio-educational tool to strive for a fairer society and the implications of this proposal for the field of education. Basic Income is a tool for deep social transformation, under which education becomes an element aimed at the integral development of the subject and not a mere personal investment as the theory of human capital proposes. Faced with the limitations of traditional anti-poverty programs, a Basic Income would contribute powerfully to eliminating poverty, job insecurity and fostering entrepreneurship. Under this proposal, education would break away from the neoliberal theses of Human Capital and the promotion of employability, and the balance between the use value and the exchange value of education would be recovered.
