Alonso de Cartagena, also known as Alfonso de Cartagena, or Alfonso of Burgos (he was Bishop of this city), or Alonso or Alfonso de Santa Maria (this is the first family name adopted by his father, the Rabbi of Toledo Solomon Ha-Levi after his conversion to the Christianity), is one of the most important personalities among the intellectuals of the reign of Juan II of Castile, in the first half of the 15th century. He stood aut for his talent in the ecclesiastical, diplomatic and literary spheres. In this latest one in a double field: the translation of the works by Cicero and Seneca and the creation of his own ones, writing in Latin and in Spanish. His production usually responds to requests from its immediate surroundings, either superiors (the King and other members of the high nobility) or friends interested in the studia humanitatis. This article provides a tour of the genres cultivated, latin and Spanish works, relations with European humanism, recipients of its texts and his interest in the education of their contemporaries in history, classic literature and jurisprudence.
