Abstract

Glaucoma is a disease whose clear description is difficult. When Hippocrates (460 BC - 370 BC) addressed the term ‘glaucosis’, he was referring to the cloudy gray-blue color of appearance in the pupil, sometimes associated with blindness. During the following centuries different observations were made and they led to written references about what nowadays would be a diagnosis of advanced cases of closed angle glaucoma. From the mid-19th century until now, all forms of pathology have been linked to a high intraocular pressure, although what can be considered a high value in one eye may be normal for the other one. The resolution for this problem that is caused by glaucoma has arrived late and has been totally dependent on the advances in the context of diagnosis.
