Abstract

From mediaeval times onwards, the peculiarities of the present-day Province of Leon as a crossroads linking Spain’s Central Plateau to the coastal regions of Galicia and Asturias encouraged the appearance of an extensive network of hostels. These were often identified with the Saint James’s Way to Compostella. An extensive range of documents is used in the present piece of work to undertake a study of the evolution of this network.  The changes and continuities occurring in it during the centuries of the Late Middle Ages and the Modern Era, are analysed. The approach has differential treatments for handling the contrasts between the predominantly rural world of the region and its urban areas.
