Résumé

The sense of coherence helps us view life events as significant, predictable, and manageable and it is thus thought to reduce stress and promote health. In contrast, the multiple demands faced by university students can trigger stress. In this study, we aimed to determine if the sense of coherence was related to emotional exhaustion. Participants were 960 university students (convenience sampling), 81% were women. They completed two self-report questionnaires: the SOC-13 Sense of Coherence Questionnaire and the Emotional Exhaustion Scale. We did correlation analyses and the Student’s t test to detect differences between groups. Women scored higher than men in emotional exhaustion. The third year students achieved higher scores in sense of coherence than first year students. Students with high scores in sense of coherence showed low levels of emotional exhaustion. These results indicate that it would be useful to design and implement strategies that help increase the sense of coherence and therefore reduce emotional exhaustion in university students.
