In ancient Rome, wine adquired a great importance with religious and social implications. There were a great variety of wines and a convention to choose and consume them. Although men could drink wine freely, women had it forbidden because they tended to loose their inhibitions under the influence of alcohol. However, women used to participate in bacchanalias drinking without control, which constitute an assault against the "mores maiorum", being those forbidden by the Roman Senate in 186 b.C.
