Abstract

There is a certain degree of agreement in considering that the Spanish particle como is one of the most complex in its Grammar. Of the multiple values that it may acquire the following are particularly outstanding: its relative value, (No me gusta la manera como nos lo dijo, Hizo el problema como todos pensábamos que lo haría, No recordaba cómo lo había hecho); its comparative value, (Lee tantas novelas como revistas); its value as a connector (Le gusta componer tanto romances como sonetos); its prepositional value, (Su marido hace horas extras como albañil), or its adverbial value (Lo hizo como con pena). Moreover, it can acquire the values of the discourse markers. This study examines one of these latter contexts, (-Armando no hace más que quejarse de todos los problemas que tiene/-¡Como si fuera la única persona que tiene problemas en este mundo!) where the particle is combined with si to form a grammatical unit and to introduce independent sequences differentiating them from others (Lo trató como si fuera un niño de 9 años) where como and si do not form a block and behave as a relative and a conditional respectively.
