Abstract
The present article systematizes, from the viewpoint of literary theory, the characteristics that define the gothic novel genre. A close look at the special features that determine it (plot, characters, narrator, space-time coordinates) will allow us to establish and fix more accurately the limits with regards to close and parallel genres rising at the time (sentimental novel and historie novel), as well as laying clown the foundations for further analysis of particular novels.
