Abstract

A number of studies carried out in various Spanish universities have highlighted the under-representation of women in academic and university life. This is true not only in Spanish universities, but also in neighbouring European countries. The University of Leon is no exception. If the presence of women among academic teaching and research staff is limited (38.15% of the total), it is even more striking how few they are among the senior staff posts involved in the governance, representation and consultation of the University (24.48%), the Faculties and Schools (31.25% and 10.54%, respectively) and the Departments (41.68%). This paper describes the state of affairs, using supporting data provided by the University of Leon itself on its web-page. It also attempts to discover the causes that have led to this situation.
