Abstract

Any power that is conveived of and intends to manifest itself in absolute terms does so impregnated with martial content. In post-civil war Spain these contents are found in the way institutions are run, in political practices and in the organisation of space, including urban areas. To uphold this thesis it is shown how the said martial contents are clearly seen in the models or general con ceptions of towns _for example in the military model of the nuclear town_ in the planning of internal structure and in the resolution of social contradictions arising within the urban area, through what are known as plans of defence for the social control of the city. Finally, it will be demonstrated how military influences or determinants in the organisation of urban areas are constant in our societies although their intensity may vary and their formal manifestations be more or less explicit.
