Construction of the San Marcos cloister in León was completed in the last third of the 17th century and the first third of the 18th century, imitating the structures projected in the Renaissance in order to achieve a unity of style. An iconographic programme was selected for the sculptural decoration of the vaults and walls, consisting of important figures who exercised the leadership of the auctoritas. These represented virtus, understood as moral perfection, and served as an exempla for the behaviour of the Knights of the Order of Santiago.
