Abstract

For over twenty years, approximately twenty-five percent of students in the Bachelor of Communication Studies, Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán (FES Acatlán) Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) does not approve the statistics course in his first opportunity. In this regard, members of the school community have drawn the attitude of students towards statistics as a possible factor that relates to such results. While there are historical data of student achievement, no specific studies. In order to identify the possible relationship between students' attitudes toward statistics and student achievement obtained in this, a non- experimental research, correlational and mixed approach was developed. For data collection questionnaires and self-built Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATS), by Schau et al (Schau, 1995) were applied, and records of observations and documents were made they were applied. Regarding the processing and data analysis methods and descriptive statistical analyzes were used; Analysis paths (Path Analysis) and structural equations; Multivariate analysis (principal components, factorial and cluster) and nonparametric analysis for categorical data (measures of association ρ, τ, d and γ). In addition, tools such as Excel, Visual Basic, language R and Graphviz were used. The study results allowed to confirm the relationship between attitude towards statistics by students who made up the sample, and school performance that reached therein; describe the behavior of the interaction of personal and attitudes regarding both general attitude factors such as levels, academics; and advance the differentiation of ratings that have students about the importance of statistics in their training
