Abstract
Aim: TodeterminetheincidenceofmajorinjuriessustainedinLeon�swrestlingandto evaluate theeffectofrulesmodificationonthatincidence. Material andmethods: This isaretrospective(2006�07) andprospectivecohorts(2008, modified rules)study.Allwrestlers(meanage2276,8 years)whotookpartinsenior competition duringwinterseasonsin2006,2007and2008,wereincludedinthestudy. Data wereobtainedbymeansofcompetitionrecords,accidentreportsandspecificand personal questionnaires.Majorinjurieswereconsideredwhentheytookplacewhile wrestling andasaresult,thewrestlerswereoutofformorethan28days.Incidenceof major injurieswascalculatedwithregardtothenumberofcompetitions,combats, takedowns andwrestlers. Results: A totalof143malewrestlerstookpartatleastinoneofthe3seasons.14injuries were documentedaffectingto13wrestlers.Themostfrequentlyinjuredbodyregions were shoulderandknee,andthemostfrequentinjuriesweresprainsfollowedby contusions andjointdislocations.Inthetotalofanalyzedseasons,amajorinjurywas observed every7competitions,161combatsand/or400takedowns;andoneper36 wrestlers sufferedamajorinjury.Eachofevery4majorinjurieswereregisteredduring 2006 and2007,andnoneduring2008,whenanewrulewasincluded.Somedifferencesin the incidenceofmajorinjurieswereobserved,butnoneofthemwerestatistically significant. Conclusions: Leon�swrestlingshowsandincidenceofinjuriessimilartoothercombat sports. Areductionintheincidenceofmajorinjuriesisobservedwhenallthereleasesand the fallsareinterpretedasa��completefall��andwhenthefightendsaftertwofalls. However,longerstudiesarerequiredinordertoconfirmthesefindings.
