Abstract

This present study is based on the formulation of hypotheses that accidents which occurred in mainland Portugal pertaining to the road transportation of liquid or gaseous fuels were influenced by the country’s physical geography. For this purpose, the relation between road transportation of fuels, road stretches and the black spots of the road matrix was analysed. Some of the accidents - which occurred in Portugal - that revealed the greatest negative impacts regarding human life and the natural environment were also described and emphasised. The results obtained validate the general objective of the investigation, having verified that the geographical factors present themselves as elements that influence the causes and consequences of accidents involving vehicles that distribute liquid and gaseous fuels.
