Abstract

The work presented aims to analyze the characteristics and impact of care on primary caregivers who are responsible for a relative with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dependency. We analyze the profile of the caregivers, their objective and subjective burden, dysfunctional thoughts and biopsychosocial health. More specifically, we show the results obtained after assessing burden and stress experienced by 75 primary caregivers. We also assessed their general health status (anxiety, depression, insomnia, social dysfunction) and care-related thoughts. The results obtained revealed the existence of physical and psychological health issues in caregivers who experienced higher levels of subjective burden or stress. Finally we stress to the relevance of services and programs aimed to improve caregivers’ health status.
