The conservation of cultural heritage in coastal cliff areas is potentially threatened by erosion processes. This work aims to characterize the processes of coastal retreat that affect the conservation of El Castiellu de Podes hillfort (Asturias), and to determine the factors that control their development. The applied methodology combines acquisition of geological and geomorphological data, GIS data management and topographic monitoring of 21 control points. Coastal retreat partially affecting the hillfort remnants includes mainly slope instability processes (falls, topples, translational slides and complex movements). The development of these processes is controlled by geological factors (structural pattern and lithology contrast), marine dynamics and its relationship with storms in the area, and rainfall regime. The preliminary measurements obtained by topographic control imply coastal recession rates of less than 1 cm/year, although these results must be confirmed by ongoing research
