Abstract

Alcohol, tobacco and drugs is a widespread fact among young people in developed countries, including the university. The use of these substances among students has implications both educational level and public health. This research aimed to study the patterns and characteristics of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs among college of Cantabria. To do an exploratory cross-sectional descriptive epidemiological study was conducted in the academic year 2001-2002. He was selected 1038 students, whom a questionnaire of 41 questions regarding consumption of such substances are sent. From the results it was observed that the most consumed substance in the last month was the alcohol (79.4%), followed by tobacco (37.3%), and between drugs, marijuana (14.5%), followed drug design (2.5%), cocaine (1.9%) and amphetamines (1.6%). There were sociodemographic factors that were associated with increased consumption, being male, living outside the family home, etc. . A significant association between consumption of different substances tested, alcohol, tobacco and marijuana was observed.
