Resumen

Background:Considering the development of social networks and the technologies of information and communication, this paper aims is to analyse the effect of social networks, in particular, the creation of web pages on Facebook on motivation and academic performance of students at the University. Methods: We created a page for a course grade offered at University of León. Additional information to those offered in class was added to the wall of the and in the forum opened the debate on issues that arise the interest of students. Results: The results suggest an involvement of the students more active in the forum and how the fact of being added to the page derives in a higher mark, being the difference statistically significant between those students that joined to the web page and those that not. Conclusions: This initiative as a teaching tool seems to be consolidating teacher-student relationship. Thus, in an anonymous questionnaire students positively valued teaching innovation indicating their interest in similar initiatives in other subjects and how participation in the Facebook page increased their motivation for the subject.
