Abstract

The Duero Basin is one of the highest alpine intra-mountain depressions in Europe (>800 m). Often considered as part of the Cantabrian-Pyrenean foreland basin, its origin cannot be supported only by the alpine crustal shortening; therefore the combined analysis of lithospheric-scale deformation is required. In this study we present the results of a series of analogue models that allowed us to gain insights into the contribution of the lithospheric deformation and subsequent isostatic processes, which may explain the observed variations in the depth to the Moho underneath the basins and nearby mountain ranges, as well as the high topography of the basin.
