Abstract

Due to fossil fuel shortage and pollution, renewable energies have played an important role in global energy scenario. Among renewable energies, biomass is quite important, presenting some advantages such as zero-net carbon dioxide emissions. Extremadura is a region with various and abundant biomass resources. Among them, we can point out olive and grape pomace and pyrenean oak, whose energy processing would be doubly advantageous: energy use and waste removal. However, during its energy use, biomass might produce some pollutants (in solid, liquid and gas state) that are harmful for the environment and human health. Therefore, actions devoted to reduce the amount of these compounds are necessary. The aim of this research work was to study the effect of different treatments to reduce pollutants during biomass energy use. With this purpose, three different wastes were used: olive and grape pomace and pyrenean oak. The treatments were the following: mixing with pyrenean oak, washing treatments, different heating rates and the use of active carbon. In order to check the effectiveness of these treatments, a coupled thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry system (TG/MS) was used.
