Abstract

This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of the factors influencing business tourism worldwide. More specifically aims to: Understand the factors that influence the evolution of short and medium-term of demand in the international business segment and may be susceptible to control by the economic agents and policy makers of destinations; realize the influence of neighboring territories in performance of business tourism countries, and present a set of prescriptions for the strategic sector of Portuguese business tourism. The outputs of this investigation demonstrate that the private investment in fixed capital in tourism sector, the leisure travel and tourism spending, and the degree of trade openness of the countries are explanatory variables that explain the evolution of short and medium-term on the business travel and tourism spending. This study also reveals that the evolution of business travel and tourism spending in a country, does not vary with the evolution of business travel and tourism spending from neighboring countries, nor with the exogenous characteristics of these adjacent countries. Finally, based on the managerial implications are shown a set of recommendations for Portugal.
