Abstract

A study on the incidence of cystic (luteinized or not) follicles and cystic corpora lutea in 1489 bovine females sacrificed in the slaughterhouses of León was carried out. The frequency of cystic follicles was 11.8%, being the 88.6% of them not luteinized and the 11.4% luteinized. With regard to the age of the animals the cystic follicles were showed with a higher frequency (13.4%) in females from 11 to 15 years. With regard to the breed, the Friesian had the highest incidence (14%). These cysts were statistically associated with other genital lesions such as the cystic endometrial hyperplasia. Furthermore cystic not luteinized follicles had a higher frequency during the summer while the luteinized ones during the winter. The incidence of the cystic corpora lutea was 5.8%. Amongst the breeds the Alistano-Sanabresa was more affected (7.1%) than the others and with regard to the age the females from 2 to 4 years had the highest incidence. This lesion was observed mainly during the spring and it was not statistically associated with other genital lesions.
