Abstract

In daily work with horses, they show many different behaviours when handling them that have an impact on our safety as professionals.The domestication of Equus caballus has involved a series of modifications in the way of life and routines or activities for this species. These changes in their quality of life have, in some cases, led to inappropriate behaviour which complicates their handling and sometimes makes it dangerous. Animal wellbeing is an increasingly expanding area of research that involves analysing the conditions in which domestic and farm animals live in order to try to improve them and, thus, enhance their quality of life and prevent the adverse or stressful effects that may alter their health. There are other factors that can produce behavioural alterations when handling horses such as hormonal alterations, metabolic changes, exposure to new or stressful stimuli, changes in routines, psychological traumas, painful pathologies, etc. When faced with these inappropriate behaviours and possible risks for professionals who must handle them, sedatives are often used. A number of studies outline the adverse effects of this practice which is sometimes excessive and unnecessary.Traditional Chinese Medicine can offer many benefits in this area.
